How Salmon is Being Affected by Earth's Rising Temperature
Global warming is obviously a massive issue for any and everything on the planet. However, certain species and populations are being hit harder than others, and few to none have been hit as hard as the chinook salmon. This fish is a popular food choice for millions of humans and also plays a vital role in the transfer of marine nutrients to inland waterways.
These salmon losing their numbers and potentially becoming extinct would mean more than just a seafood shortage, it would mean thousands of other aquatic creatures both in the open ocean and inland rivers and streams would begin to die off as well. These fish are rapidly losing numbers due to the loss of their waterways.
The water is considerably warmer, hindering their ability to spawn in streams and inland waterways. Also, the water levels are low due to the loss of snow pack, which is melted snow that drips into the waterways. However, there is still hope to save these precious fish that connect our streams and waterways to the vast open ocean. It would simply be to pump more water into the streams and lakes. This would be simple enough given that California's farmers take water from these streams and lakes to irrigate their farms. Why not give it back? That would be possible, only if farmers wanted to give up some of their land and crops. They would simply have to cut back on water usage and doing that would mean losing tons of crops.
This issue has gotten so bad that it has even put a few mega farmers and family owned farms out of business along the California - Oregon border. So the decision must ultimately be made, do we limit Californias agriculture system which supplies food for a whopping 80% of the United States, or do we save the salmon and keep an entire natural ecosystem from collapsing due to global warming?
